Cash vs Card in Korea: What Travelers Actually Need

Use a working card as your main payment method where accepted, and keep Korean won as a fallback for the explicit non-card exception in official guidance.

Quick decision

Prepare for a card-first trip, not a card-only trip

Primary

Use a working international card where accepted. KTO describes card use as widespread and names major hotels, department stores and general shops.

Fallback

Carry some Korean won because the same official guidance says some stores may not provide card service.

Do not guess

Do not invent a cash percentage or declare a cost winner. The accepted source establishes neither one.

Decide what each payment method is for

Use the table to assign a role to each method. It does not claim universal acceptance or a fixed cash requirement.

Where card-first preparation is supported

KTO describes credit cards as widely used and accepted at most businesses in Korea. It names major hotels, department stores and general shops, and gives Visa, MasterCard and American Express as examples.

Those examples support making a working card your primary method. They do not guarantee a specific merchant or payment attempt. Check your own card separately before the trip and do not depend on one payment path.

Why a cash fallback still has a job

The official guidance says to check card-service availability because some stores may not provide it. Carrying some won is a bounded fallback recommendation, not a claim that cash is usually required or that one shop type is always cash-only.

This guide does not assign a cash percentage or daily amount. The evidence does not support one. Your itinerary, access to another card and tolerance for a payment failure should determine the fallback.

Prepare cash through the official channels

When you need Korean won, KTO directs travelers to a bank or authorized exchange service center. It gives general weekday bank hours of 09:00 to 16:00 and warns that hours vary by bank and region, so check the specific location before visiting.

That guidance establishes where to exchange, not where the best rate will be. This article does not rank airport, Myeongdong or neighborhood exchange locations because it has no same-time, same-basis quote comparison.

No cost winner is established here

The accepted official source explains general card acceptance, its explicit exception and where to exchange cash. It does not provide a same-basis comparison that establishes whether card or cash is cheaper.

Make a separate current check for the payment method you will actually use. This guide does not turn an unmeasured cost dimension into a winner.

Questions to settle before the trip

Can I plan to use only a card?

The official guidance supports broad card use but not universal acceptance. A card-only plan removes the fallback for the exception the same source identifies.

How much cash should I carry?

No universal amount or percentage is established here. Prepare a fallback that fits your itinerary rather than copying an unsupported quota.

Where should I exchange cash?

Use a bank or authorized exchange service center and verify the specific location and hours. This guide does not establish a rate winner.

Is card or cash cheaper?

Not established by the accepted source on a same-basis comparison. Make a separate current check for the method you will actually use.

This guide is narrower than the money overview

This page answers one preparation question: how to combine card and cash. The broader Money in Korea guide covers Korean won, exchange channels and the limits of ATM claims.
