T-money Card Guide for Korea Travelers

Buy a standard T-money card when you want reloadable pay-as-you-go transit; treat the card price and stored balance as separate amounts and check refund conditions before departure.

Quick decision

Quick decision

What to choose

A standard T-money card is the straightforward pay-as-you-go choice for buses and subways when you do not need an unlimited visitor pass. The operator says the card itself costs around KRW 3,000. Money loaded onto it is separate, so buying the plastic card does not include a transit balance unless the seller explicitly loads one.

Buy and load the card

The official visitor guide lists convenience stores and station facilities among the purchase or reload channels. Availability can vary by location. Ask for T-money, then load a modest amount in won based on the trips you expect. The official evidence does not support a single perfect starting balance for every itinerary.

Use one card per traveler

Tap when boarding or entering, and tap again when leaving or alighting where required. The same card is used to calculate the trip and conditional transfer treatment. Sharing one card mid-journey is not a sound planning assumption because the fare system needs each rider's own entry and exit sequence.

Standard T-money versus T-money Travel Card

The separate T-money Travel Card is marketed to international visitors and has a published card price of KRW 4,000 plus balance. It includes partner benefits, but those benefits are not part of this comparison and are not used to rank the product. Choose based on the transit and payment function you actually need, not an unverified promise of universal discounts.

Refund the remaining balance carefully

The operator describes balance refunds and notes that a fee can apply. Limits and handling channels matter, so check the official rule before trying to empty a large balance at the airport. The safest planning approach is to avoid loading substantially more than you expect to use.
