Your first subway trip in five steps
Use this sequence for an ordinary first ride. It explains the fare actions without turning the guide into a route planner.
How the starting fare works
The Seoul Metropolitan Government lists the current adult subway base fare as KRW 1,550 by transit card and KRW 1,650 for a single-ride ticket, effective June 28, 2025. Treat those figures as the starting basis for a normal adult trip, not a promise that every destination costs the same.
For the combined transfer calculation, the official guide uses a 10 km base range and adds KRW 100 for each additional 5 km after the total trip distance exceeds that range. A longer journey can therefore cost more than the starting fare.
Tag at both ends
Tap your fare medium at the gate when you enter and again when you leave. The official integrated public-transport rule makes both actions part of the fare and transfer record.
If a gate does not accept the tap, resolve it at the station rather than assuming the trip was recorded correctly.
Transfers are conditional
The official guide describes up to five free transfers under the integrated fare system. That does not make every connected journey free: the correct taps, the transfer window, and any distance-based addition still matter.
The published transfer window is generally within 30 minutes after getting off the previous mode. It extends to 60 minutes from 9 PM to 7 AM. These rules matter when a journey combines eligible transport modes; they are not a promise that every route or special service shares one fare basis.
When to check again
Recheck the official source when the trip is long, uses a service with a separate fare basis, or is time-critical. This guide does not calculate a route-specific total and does not report live disruption, crowding or delays.
