The stated airport rail path requires one transfer: take AREX to Seoul Station, then Line 4 to Myeongdong. This comparison does not measure the transfer inside Seoul Station or the distance from Myeongdong Station to a hotel.
Hongdae for direct All-stop AREX access and evening activity
Hongdae fits when you want an AREX All-stop train to the area anchor without a subway transfer. Hongik Univ. Station is on the All-stop route and also connects with Line 2 and the Gyeongui-Jungang Line.
VisitKorea documents shops, buskers, dance performances and named activity streets in Hongdae. That supports evening-activity context, but it does not establish Hongdae as Seoul's top nightlife area. The AREX Express does not stop at Hongik Univ. Station.
Jongno / Insadong for traditional and historic context
Choose Jongno / Insadong when traditional and historic context is the main reason for selecting a base. VisitKorea documents Insadong's galleries, traditional teahouses and Korean cultural storefronts. Anguk Station on Line 3 is the primary anchor used here, with Jongno 3-ga as a secondary transport anchor.
The stated airport path is the AREX All-stop train to Gongdeok, followed by Line 5 to Jongno 3-ga. That is one rail transfer. The route ends at an area anchor, not a specific hotel entrance.
Gangnam for a south-Seoul-heavy itinerary
Choose Gangnam only when a large share of your planned stops is south of the Hangang. VisitKorea identifies the Gangnam Station area south of the river and documents its transport and commercial setting. Gangnam Station on Line 2 is the comparison anchor.
The stated airport path uses the AREX All-stop train to Hongik Univ., then Line 2 to Gangnam. It requires one rail transfer. No total journey time is inferred from that topology.
Seoul Station area for direct airport rail and a major rail anchor
The Seoul Station area fits when direct AREX access and the main station itself are central to your plan. Both AREX Express and All-stop trains serve Seoul Station without a subway transfer. The station data used here identifies Line 1 and Line 4 anchors, while the AREX operator identifies the Airport Railroad connection.
VisitKorea states that Seoullo 7017 connects directly to Seoul Station. That makes the area's transport role relevant here; it does not make the area a shopping, historic or evening-activity winner.
If this is your first Seoul trip
The information compared here does not support one area as the answer for every first-time visitor. Start with the part of your itinerary that is least flexible: a shopping focus, traditional and historic context, a south-Seoul concentration, or an airport rail preference. If none dominates, keep more than one area on your shortlist until you compare your actual planned stops.

"Direct" means the named area anchor is served by the stated AREX train without a subway transfer. It does not mean a hotel is at the station, and it does not include walking, waiting or service conditions.
Myeongdong, Jongno / Insadong and Gangnam each have a one-transfer path in this comparison. Hongdae and Seoul Station have zero-transfer AREX paths and remain tied for that narrow priority. The comparison does not choose between the two using time, hotel distance or commercial factors.
Station anchors, not neighborhood boundaries
The station references make the five areas comparable without drawing artificial neighborhood borders. Myeongdong Station, Hongik Univ. Station, Anguk Station, Gangnam Station and Seoul Station are the primary anchors. Jongno 3-ga is also used as a secondary anchor for the stated Line 5 airport path to the Jongno / Insadong area.
